The Importance of Healthcare Data Analytics

Hospitals have been mining patient data for many years. Now more than ever, reporting and analytics have become one of the most important tasks. Not only is it essential to improve the quality of patient care, the patient and practitioner experience, advance medical research, as well as identify and utilize a tool to properly plan for budgeting and funding.

Most hospitals have discovered by now that one person with a calculator and a spreadsheet does not come close to meeting their reporting and analytics needs. Once you are capturing the right data, you need to be reporting and analyzing this information, internally for quality and improvement and externally for regulatory guidelines.

I have recently come across an article in Computer Weekly that shares how the information harvested from digitalized medical data is being used to support the treatment of COVID-19. The article states, “Using insights derived from a predictive model, we could then prioritize who gets Covid-19 vaccines first after essential workers, healthcare workers and the elderly. We also identified insights such as males being at a higher risk of dying from the disease than females.” This is just the most recent example of how powerful the information derived from healthcare data can be.

The reporting capabilities of our solutions were developed to quickly support your facility’s reporting and/or analytics needs, as well as operational needs. The use of our standard operational reports helps the perioperative staff manage daily, weekly, and monthly operations. The Picis Envisionanalytics service leverages Microsoft Power BI to connect to, model, and visualize data. For OR Manager, the reports provide key performance indicators for the surgical encounter. Perioperative Service Directors and others have one source of “truth” for block utilization; case costs and times; the impact of surgeons, services, and procedures; and stock items and implants. Dynamic drill downs and filtering enable OR leadership to see what is going on behind the numbers. For enterprise deployments, multi-facility analysis is built-in, so users can benchmark and monitor the business performance of different sites. For Anesthesia Manager, the reports provide key performance and quality indicators specifically for the anesthesia environment. Anesthesia Chiefs and Business Managers can:

  • Track perioperative quality indicators
  • Investigate relationships within physiological data
  • Analyze productivity and supervision of anesthesia providers
  • Evaluate anesthesia case throughput

The dashboards and reports allow hospitals to conduct a complete analysis of anesthesia milestones, medications and fluids, complications, physiologic data, billable hours, supervisory ratios and productivity.

As hospitals will continue to rely on analytical trends for important decision-making, it’s essential to have a solution that supports not only the capturing of information but also analyzing that data into digestible reports that will turn numbers into actionable insights.
