Thirty Years of Listening. Why Prima Is the Next Step

For years, clinicians have moved between patients, procedures, and recovery areas while much of the software supporting their work stayed in one place. It’s a familiar arrangement, but is it still the right one?

For Marc Lloses, Executive Vice President at Picis Clinical Solutions, that question helps explain why the company developed Prima, its new mobile anesthesia documentation solution. In a recent video, Marc reflects on how more than 30 years of working with clinicians helped shape the thinking behind the product. His message is straightforward: Prima isn’t about starting over. It’s about taking what Picis has learned and applying it to the way clinicians work today.

More Than Thirty Years of Learning from Clinicians

When companies introduce new technology, there’s often talk of reinventing the experience or starting with a clean slate. Marc sees things differently. For more than three decades, clinicians worldwide have used Picis software in perioperative departments, helping the company understand how care is delivered, where workflows get complicated, and what technology needs to do to support them.

“This isn’t us starting again. It’s us taking all of it forward,” Marc explains. That experience underpins Prima. Rather than setting aside what Picis has learned, the company uses that knowledge to tackle a familiar challenge in a new way.

The Clinician Moved. The Software Didn’t.

Anyone familiar with a perioperative department knows that clinicians rarely stay in one place. They move between procedures, patients, and recovery areas, often balancing several responsibilities at once. Yet much of the software that supports their work has traditionally stayed tied to a workstation.

We’ve grown accustomed to this arrangement, but it raises a reasonable question. Why should clinicians have to return to a computer when they’re documenting somewhere else?

Prima takes a different approach. By making anesthesia documentation available on an iPad, the patient record can accompany clinicians rather than waiting for them at a workstation. For Marc, the significance goes beyond the convenience of a mobile device. It’s about giving clinicians back something that matters: time, energy, and attention.

Those aren’t always the first things discussed when evaluating healthcare software. Features, functionality, and integrations often dominate the conversation, but how technology fits into a clinician’s workday deserves just as much consideration. Making documentation available where care takes place won’t eliminate every challenge, but it can reduce the interruptions of returning to a workstation, letting technology fit more naturally into clinical workflows.

Looking Beyond Mobility

Marc’s vision for Prima extends beyond putting anesthesia documentation on an iPad. Toward the end of his video, he describes the opportunity to make information more useful once the record is in the clinician’s hands:

“And once it’s in their hands, we can start putting the right thing in front of them at the right moment. That’s the version of Prima I’m after.”

It’s a longer-term ambition that could make clinical information not only more accessible, but more useful. Anyone who has worked with complex software understands the difference. Having information available is one thing. Finding what you need without interrupting your work is another.

For Picis, that vision builds on the same principle that has guided its development for decades: listening to clinicians and understanding how technology can better support their work. The introduction of Prima marks another step in that process, bringing together years of clinical experience with a different approach to anesthesia documentation designed around today’s perioperative environment.

Marc’s message is ultimately about more than a new product. It’s about recognizing that the way clinicians work has changed and being willing to change the technology that supports them. After more than 30 years of listening to clinicians, Picis has learned that sometimes the most important change isn’t what technology can do. It’s where it can go.
