Picis Announces 2009 Customer Recognition Award Winners
Leading medical centers acknowledged for “Shaping Better Healthcare” and achieving clinical, financial and operational results using Picis solutions
WAKEFIELD, Mass. — Nov. 11, 2009 — Recognizing innovative and successful healthcare information technology (HIT) initiatives, Picis today announced the winners of its 2009 Customer Recognition Awards at the Picis Results Talk Workshop in Cambridge, Mass. The awards distinguish hospitals that are using Picis solutions to improve an organization’s clinical, financial and operational performance in the emergency department (ED), operating room (OR) or intensive care units (ICUs), further reinforcing the event’s theme of “Shaping Better Healthcare.”
Picis honored the following hospitals and medical centers:
Alegent Health, Omaha, Neb.
Award Category: ARRA HITECH Preparedness
The 10-hospital healthcare system with 1,476-beds, implemented Picis ED PulseCheck®, the market-leading emergency department information system (EDIS), in its emergency departments to help clinicians optimize patient care, improve revenue and prepare for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) funding requirements. Recently, in Washington D.C., Alegent Health presented its use of these technologies as helping them to achieve “meaningful use” of electronic medical records. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius then visited the healthcare system’s Lakeside Hospital to see a demonstration of ED PulseCheck in action as a model healthcare system leveraging HIT. Using ED PulseCheck, Alegent Health physicians now use computerized physician order entry (CPOE); this will help the system to meet the 5-10% minimum requirement outlined as “meaningful use” of HIT. Additionally, the solution has helped the health system eliminate transcription costs and speed reporting on core measure compliance from an average of two weeks to two hours.
Boston Medical Center, Boston, Mass.
Award Category: Innovation in Leveraging IT
The academic medical center, which uses Picis ED PulseCheck, OR Manager and Anesthesia Manager in its high-acuity care areas, is implementing a VMware virtualized server environment to scale Picis software across the expansive medical center without the need for additional hardware. In doing so, Boston Medical Center improved clinical communication and accuracy of information across its care areas, obtained a new level of stability on its servers and also derived financial savings.
Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, Va.
Award Category: Financial Results
The medical center, a 2008 Picis award winner for its use of the ED PulseCheck clinical information system, went live with Picis LYNX E/Point® revenue management solution in 2009 in its 45,000-square-foot, 42-bed ED. Riverside Medical reported that it recouped $1.3 million in only six months after implementing E/Point, and achieved a gross patient revenue increase of $9 million in six months after implementing Picis integrated clinical and financial emergency department charging solution. Additionally, Riverside Medical reported a significant reduction in incomplete charts, duplicate tests and illegible medical orders, and experienced a one-hour decrease in average patient turn-around time.
Scotland Health Care System, Laurinburg, N.C.
Award Category: Patient Satisfaction Results
The hospital, which recently experienced a 12-14% increase in ED visits, implemented ED PulseCheck to help decrease its average patient length of stay (LOS) and left without being seen (LWBS) rates. Following implementation of the Picis solution, Scotland Health Care System shaved nearly 60 minutes off its 250-minute LOS average in the ED, while also cutting LWBS rates in half (from 10% down to 5%). This contributed to higher levels of patient satisfaction and a bump in Press Ganey scores from 85% pre-implementation to a post-implementation level of 91%. In addition, ED PulseCheck helped to streamline processes, identify staffing and census patterns, and improve the consistency and accuracy of clinical documentation.
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, New York, N.Y.
Award Category: Interoperability Results
To decrease the amount of time clinicians spend producing printed OR documentation and increase the amount of time for patient care, the five-hospital, 2,442-bed medical center integrated Picis OR Manager — along with its case record, materials management and scheduling — with its other hospital-wide systems, including the Eclipsys Corporation information system and a data repository. This approach not only provided NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital with enterprise-wide HIT interoperability and an annual savings of approximately $227,000, but also gave it the specialized information systems required to better run and manage its OR department. Additionally, the paperless electronic patient record meets the HIMSS level 7 requirement and supports other NewYork-Presbyterian initiatives aimed at improving patient throughput, workflow and patient and staff satisfaction. The hospital also uses Picis SmarTrack® and the Picis Perioperative Dashboard to further these goals.
Parkview Health, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Award Category: Patient Care Results
Northeast Indiana’s largest healthcare provider experienced a 47% decrease in nursing documentation time following implementation of Picis Critical Care Manager for its 160 critical care beds in six hospitals. This decrease in documentation time has helped to redirect staff to patient care activities and provided significant cost savings — estimated at $465,000 annually. In addition, Parkview Health reported improved continuity of care and increased core measure compliance by 25%. User perception of clinical documentation has also improved since the Picis solution deployment.
“Our annual Customer Recognition Award winners demonstrate that innovation and success are thriving in the healthcare industry, despite challenges in staffing, overcrowding and a rocky economic climate,” said Todd Cozzens, CEO and Vice Chairman at Picis. “These hospitals’ achievements in clinical, operational and financial improvements are impressive and provide great examples of how hospitals and healthcare systems can best position themselves as ‘meaningful users’ in preparation for ARRA regulations and reimbursements. We are proud to be working with these organizations and look forward to continuing our role in helping to automate and manage their EDs, ORs and ICUs.”
