Picis Emergency Department Software Live at Abington Memorial Hospital

Picis fully integrated with hospital's Eclipsys® information system; helping to improve productivity and reduce opportunity for medical errors

WAKEFIELD, Mass. — October 10, 2007 — Picis, the leading provider of high-acuity care information systems, today announced that Abington Memorial Hospital of Abington, Pa. has implemented Picis ED PulseCheck®, a comprehensive emergency department information system (EDIS) that fully integrates with Eclipsys Sunrise Clinical Manager™, Abington's existing hospital information system (HIS). This interoperability facilitates seamless flow of patient data to and from the emergency department, helping clinicians improve patient care and the delivery of healthcare services.

“We selected ED PulseCheck for its functionality. It was also critical that the entire hospital be linked into the near real-time status of the emergency department and to provide our clinicians with quick access to all relevant patient data,” said Alison Ferren, vice president of information technology at Abington Memorial Hospital. “We believe that Picis' bidirectional integration with Eclipsys will help our hospital further improve our level of patient safety, enhance communication and increase productivity.”

Abington's Pennock Emergency Trauma Center is a large 80-bed facility that serves more than 86,000 patients annually. Highlights of the hospital's integration include:

  • Inbound Order Entry – the admitting physician or nurses can use the Eclipsys system to view all orders, results, patient status and other critical data entered into the ED PulseCheck system. This information helps eliminate delays in providing patient care by enabling clinicians to view the most current information and increase patient throughput from the ED to inpatient beds.
  • Outbound Pharmacy – interoperability with the hospital's pharmacy system offers easy access to all medication orders and patient medication history. This seamless integration enables all providers to share medication history, allergies and drug interaction information across the hospital to help reduce patient errors and improve patient care.
  • Outbound Discrete Data Elements –this transfer of discrete data and codes enables designated sections of the patient chart to be sent to the Eclipsys system, providing easier updates for reporting logs, patient reports, and demographic and disease tracking without redundant data entry or repeated questioning of patients.
  • Bedboard Interface –admission orders are sent to the bed control system in-house where patient flow is tracked using ED PulseCheck — entering beds for ED patients, reviewing and recording the bed status (ready, not ready, why) of hospital beds. This facilitates admissions to the floors and fosters communication and accountability throughout the organization. In addition, ED PulseCheck provides valuable data on admission/bed times and patient flow that every ED administrator struggles to report.

“Picis is proud to demonstrate what we believe is an unprecedented level of interoperability in the industry, which is a testament to the commitment of Picis support and dedication,” said Todd Cozzens, president and CEO, Picis. “This successful, large-scale deployment shows that hospitals across the country don't need to sacrifice functionality for interoperability in their high-acuity areas.”
