Veterans Health Administration Purchases Picis Anesthesia Software for Five Hospitals in Calif. and Nevada
Network expands use of Picis high-acuity care solutions; underscores Picis proven integration with the VA
WAKEFIELD, Mass.— July 09, 2007 — (BUSINESS WIRE)
Picis, Inc., an established provider of high-acuity care information systems, today announced that VA Sierra Pacific Network, has purchased CareSuite™ Anesthesia Manager, Preop Manager and PACU Manager. The group of five medical centers in Northern Calif., and Nevada will implement Picis to automate anesthesia documentation and the recovery room process of all surgical cases, streamlining clinician workflow before, during and after surgery.
The hospital network will combine CareSuite Anesthesia Manager with Picis critical care software, which is already live in the ICUs of all five medical centers. The implementation of CareSuite — and tight integration with the VA health system's VistA mainframe hospital information system — will enable clinicians to manage the complex data and care process from a patient's perioperative encounter to critical care, providing a continuous electronic record even when a patient moves from one hospital to another within the network.
VA Palo Alto Medical Center, a 300-bed tertiary care medical center within the Sierra Pacific Network, went live with Picis Anesthesia Manager and PACU Manager in 2005, as part of a pilot project to computerize the management of anesthesia care in its 12 operating rooms and 12 post anesthesia care unit beds. The success of this pilot helped support the purchase of the Picis anesthesia modules for the entire Sierra Pacific Network of hospitals.
“Picis' clinical automation expertise in high-acuity care, and integration with the VA hospitals VistA system, is at the forefront of health information technology,” stated Carlos Nunez, M.D., chief physician executive of Picis, and a practicing anesthesiologist and intensivist. “By integrating CareSuite's critical care, anesthesia and recovery room documentation with VistA data, clinicians can better manage critical and complex patient data, helping to improve patient outcomes, reduce potential for errors and improve efficiency.”
Facilities included in this agreement: San Francisco VA Medical Center; VA Central California Health Care System, Fresno, Calif.; VA Northern California Health Care System, Sacramento, Calif.; VA Palo Alto Health Care System and VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, Reno, Nev.
In addition to integrating with VistA, the Sierra Pacific Network uses CareSuite ICU data to feed the VA's analytics data warehouse from RGI Analytics, allowing clinicians to run complex queries and look for trends that might impact outcomes. This information has contributed to quality improvement research and many published papers, including the effects of tachycardia on surgical and medical ICU patients and abnormal potassium levels in ICU patients.
Anesthesia Manager is a comprehensive anesthesia information management system that records complex physiologic data, helps create specialized anesthesia documentation, assists perioperative care management, and supports anesthesia workflow. Anesthesia Manager also allows anesthesia providers to chart and manage a patient's progress beyond surgery to the PACU and ICU, closing the loop and improving communication and documentation across care environments. All pertinent data is available to the clinicians at the point of care and available for powerful data analysis and reporting.
