$17.2 Billion in Stimulus Incentives Available Beginning Fiscal 2011
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provides Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments to eligible providers, such as physicians and hospitals, in order to increase the adoption of EHRs. To receive the incentive payments, providers must demonstrate “meaningful use” of a certified EHR. The Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), a nonprofit organization with the public mission of accelerating the adoption of health IT, is currently responsible for certifying EHRs.
Working together toward "meaningful use" definitions
The process of defining "meaningful use" of electronic health records (EHRs) is well underway by the HIT Policy Committee, a Federal Advisory Committee to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The HIT Policy Committee will make the final recommendations on "meaningful use" definitions to the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
